How does the VAT exemption work?

There is not a single rule in effect for all of Brazil regarding the IPVA exemption. This is because it is up to each of the country's federative units, the states, to define the rules for exemption or not.

In this case, the year of manufacture of the car models is always used to determine whether a vehicle will receive the exemption. Thus, generally the models of the older generations have the possibility of being released from the payment of the IPVA. However, as we mentioned, the number of years required for a car to receive the exemption varies greatly.

For example, some states deliver the exemption for cars that are 10 years old or more, while others only when the vehicle is more than 30 years old. There are still those states that adopt the progressive reduction, which are Pernambuco and Minas Gerais, so that the older the car gets, the cheaper your IPVA will be.
