There are different ways to show interest in someone. Even sometimes people end up confusing the signs and are frustrated by creating unrealistic expectations. There are now even published studies on how a person's flirting reveals about them.
Study on how to flirt
In 2018, work was carried out to analyze different forms of flirting and what the people involved ultimately intended. That is, the study examined different forms of flirting and assessed whether the flirting wanted to have just a quick relationship or a deeper involvement. The work was published in Evolutionary Psychological Science magazine and gathered three studies with different numbers of people. The first with 416 people, the second with 396 and the third with 486 participants.
As a result, the authors identified different ways of approaching flirting, such as telling the person who they look like with a celebrity, speak more softly to entice the person to come closer to listen or show interest in topics at hand common. It was also noticed that flirtations such as writing poems and sending text messages shortly after getting the cell phone contact or asking if the person was attracted to the perfume they were wearing.
The researchers separated flirting into typical, that is, more common flirting behavior, and atypical flirting, which is less common behavior (such as writing poems, for example). After that, they checked the intentions according to the types of flirts. In general, people who used atypical flirting strategies were not looking for a solid relationship, but something fleeting. While those who flirted in a more traditional way were in a better mood for a serious relationship.
The authors point out that just observing how someone flirts does not necessarily indicate their future interest, but that these behaviors can help to understand what is coming next. So always pay attention to details when getting to know someone.
