Law can fine pet shops and veterinary clinics if they do not report mistreatment

Last Monday, the 21st, a law was published in the Official Gazette of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro that provides for the application of fines and warnings to veterinary clinics and pet shops that analyze evidence in mistreatment of animals and not report it to the Civil Police. To make the complaint, just go to an Environmental Protection Police Station, and this can also be done digitally or by written letter.

In addition to reporting being mandatory, the law still requires that data must be forwarded as soon as possible. The establishments, as soon as they perceive signs of mistreatment, need to inform the data of the animals and their companions, as well as the attendance report, procedures that were performed on the animal and its state of health current.

In the event of non-compliance with the new law, violators are then subject to the penalties provided for in the Penal Code,

at theArticle 72º from the LawFederal 9,605/1998, better known as LawincrimesEnvironmental. It is also planned to suspend the operation of establishments that fail to comply with the new law, in addition to the fines and warnings that will be applied.
