Do face-to-face courses better prepare teachers? Understand!

According to a survey by the NGO Todos pela Educação, around 84% of the teachers interviewed responded that teachers who graduate from face-to-face courses leave university better prepared than those who study at institutions distance. This study analyzed the responses of 6,775 respondents between July and December 2022. All are employees of municipal and state public schools, from elementary school I to high school.

There are advantages and disadvantages to each teaching modality. A face-to-face course can offer a more direct interaction between students and professors, allowing for an exchange of experiences and more dynamic learning. On the other hand, a distance course can offer more flexible schedules, allowing the student to reconcile studies and work.

This study raised a lot of concern. This is because, according to the Higher Education Census,

61.1% of the graduates of these graduations came from EAD in 2020. Which means that there is a great advance in distance education in teacher training courses. In distance learning degrees, theThe classes are much more theoretical and do not prepare professionals for the reality of schools. In addition, quality assessment mechanisms are weak and flawed, added to the lack of regulation in opening/closing courses.

Teachers' main challenges

Still according to the survey, the biggest challenges of teachers on a daily basis are:

  • Disinterest of students;
  • Learning gap.

As a result, according to the survey, it will be necessary for governments to invest in support psychological (for both teachers and students), salary increases, reinforcement and recovery programs. Gabriel Corrêa, director of Public Policies at Todos pela Educação, said that it is necessary to review the way in which courses are evaluated and strengthen programs to bring future teachers closer to schools public.

“It is also up to the Departments of Education to invest in good continuing education policies, seeking the professional development of teachers throughout their entire careers. Beginning teachers, for example, need much more support than they have received.”
