A novelty in the world of archeology caught the attention of researchers and the global community. One roman mosaic over 1,600 years old was found in central Syria, in a region formerly controlled by rebels seeking power.

The Roman mosaic covers an area of approximately 120 square meters and has dimensions of 20m x 6m. The archaeological piece of historical importance was found in the region of Homs, in a building in the region of Rastan, a former stronghold of rebels in the Syrian civil war in 2018.

The mosaic was made more than 1000 years ago and represents figures that were well known to us until then, such as the Trojan War and the Amazons, often represented in films. Today, the mosaic is considered the rarest of its kind.

Rare find is cause for joy for researchers
The discovery of this Roman mosaic represents a victory in world history, ranked as the most important since the outbreak of conflicts in the region in 2011. This is because the Civil War in Syria contributed to the devastation of a good part of the country's historical relics. One of the most emblematic cases was the destruction of part of the city of Palmyra by the Islamic State in 2015.
Thus, a museologist and high-ranking official of the Directorate of Museums and Antiquities of Syria expressed contentment and feeling of joy when seeing the mosaic, and stated that humanity was facing a discovery globally rare.
Some details were also revealed by the official, such as the portrayal of Neptune, considered the Roman god of the sea, and his 40 women, as well as the famous conflict scene between Hercules and Queen Hippolyta, which ends in the death of the Amazon and the capture of her belt by Hercules.
