Europe dominates list
Using a mathematical calculation to discover the level of perfection of the cities, the researchers found out which ones are closest to the golden ratio, known as the sequence of perfection. European cities dominate the list. Read more below.
Athens, Greece
Historical city, Athens is composed of several architectural styles. In addition to the classic old buildings, the city also has contemporary buildings, the so-called skyscrapers.
In 1821, the city gained independence from Ottoman rule, and since then a new phase in the country's architecture has begun. Thus, according to the researchers' calculations, Athens has 77.5% similarity with the golden ratio.
Barcelona, Spain
The darling of Europe is considered one of the most modern and architecturally diverse cities. In the city landscape it is possible to see buildings in the most diverse styles, such as Gothic and modern. For OMA, the city has 81.9% proximity to the golden ratio.
New York, United States
One of the most cosmopolitan cities on the planet, New York has been influenced by different periods of architectural history, such as the Greek Renaissance and Art Deco. According to the researchers, the city known as the Big Apple is 77.7% close to the golden ratio.

The bombings in World War II were not enough to destroy the beauty of Prague, made up of buildings inspired by the Roman, Renaissance, Gothic and Baroque styles. For this reason, the researchers understand that the city is 78.7% close to the golden ratio.
Rome Italy
The city of Rome is one of the oldest in the world and was responsible for creating Roman aesthetics and styles. On the OMA list, the Italian city was 82% similar to the golden ratio.
In the city's landscape it is possible to see aqueducts, amphitheaters, arches and the famous churches. All of them live harmoniously with other modern styles of architecture in the city.
Venice, Italy
For the magazine, Venice is considered the most beautiful city in the world, having 83.3% similarity with the golden ratio. A dream of many travellers, Venice is known for its famous canals and Gothic architecture with Byzantine and Ottoman influences. Certainly, it is worth the visit to this historical heritage.
