Currently, Bolsa Família benefits more than 20 million families who are in vulnerable financial conditions. Families who are in a state of poverty or extreme poverty in Brazil receive the benefit.
It is estimated, therefore, that this is the largest Brazilian social program for low-income people.
During the official announcement, the minister Wellington Dias, from Development and Social Assistance, stated that no family in a vulnerable financial situation will receive less than R$600. These are the new announcements:
- Early Childhood Benefit: R$ 150 additional for children up to six years old.
- If it is a family consisting of three children up to six years old, the monthly transfer would reach R$ 1,050;
- Variable Family Benefit: R$ 50 additional for young people up to 18 years of age and for pregnant women;
- Citizenship Income Benefit: BRL 142 for each member of the family;
- Minimum income: as advised by Dias, no family will be without the minimum family income, regardless of age.
Of all these announcements, only 'Primeira Infância' will start this March. The other additions to the income will arrive from June onwards.
The Ministry of Development stated that this was an “operational problem” and would not start for now.
Even if the additional payments are not transferred now, the amount of R$ 600 for each family will continue to be paid. Pregnant women and young people up to 18 years old will only be contemplated in June this year.
