Who will receive up to 99% off?
The law guarantees that students who have debts overdue for more than 3 months will be able to apply for forgiveness. However, the discount percentage will depend on how long the debt has been open, as well as the student's financial situation. For example, students who contracted the FIES in 2017 and who have a debt of at least three months until the date of approval of the law, will have a 12% discount. In this case, these debts may be paid in cash or in up to 150 installments.
In the case of debts that matured more than 365 days before the approval of the law, they will have a discount of more than 77%. Finally, the Government also guaranteed that students enrolled in CadÚnico can receive up to 99% of debt forgiveness. This is the program that the State uses to collect data on families in situations of social vulnerability. Also, those who received Emergency Aid during the Covid-19 pandemic will also be able to receive this percentage.
How to secure the discount
Students who fall into this situation of indebtedness can contact Caixa Econômica Federal or Banco do Brasil for renegotiation. This can be done through the official channels of the institutions mentioned above, both online and over the phone. In addition, it is also possible to go to a Caixa branch and request a renegotiation. Then, based on the analysis of these students' data, discounts will be offered.
