How is the minimum wage readjusted?
Every year, the LDO (Budget Guidelines Law) calculates a minimum wage forecast for the following year. The analysis is greatly influenced by the purchasing power of Brazilians, as the readjustment must ensure that the salary is above the inflation. This means that the minimum wage needs to be readjusted annually to ensure that the population is able to purchase basic necessities.
However, this readjustment is not always sufficient, since the prices of products may change several times during the year. An example was the year 2021, which closed accounts with the minimum wage worth less than inflation.
Why do surveys point to a new minimum wage of R$ 1,310.17?
In fact, the National Congress stipulated that the minimum wage for 2023 would be worth BRL 1,294, but this number can be changed. According to the National Consumer Price Index (INPC), expected inflation for 2023 will rise from 6.7% to 8.1%. Thus, ideally, the base salary should follow the increase with an additional R$98.17, bringing the total to R$1,310.17.
It is worth remembering that this increase is not real, since it only ensures that inflation does not exceed what is received by workers.
Although these predictions are very detailed and realistic, the official value of the minimum wage for 2023 will only be released in January of next year.
