Among the phrases are:
- “We've always done it this way”
This phrase can show that you have a tough mindset, fixed changes or new suggestions. In this way, you say that there is nothing wrong with the current form, which can discourage motivation and innovation.
Instead, you need to say “we've always done it this way, but let's see if it's time to change practices”.
- “In my day, it was worse”
Is suffering to be expected? It's like the pain of the past has to justify the pain of now. This can silence the person who wants to express an issue.
You must say: In my day we had much worse things, and I consider myself happy that it is better for you. How can we make it even better?
- “It is better to keep our salary information private”
It may demonstrate that you don't value transparency. So some groups, like women and racial minorities, remain vulnerable.
Say instead, "It's important to have open conversations about salary."
- “We went with [person X] because they have more experience.”
You're ignoring the fact that experiences rely on privilege and accessibility. People often start in different ways.
Don't let experience overwhelm and affect potential. Say: (Fulano X) has more experience and will have other opportunities. We chose (so-and-so Y) based on his potential.”
- “We have no term limits.”
You can maintain status and say leaders deserve this “undefined” position. Change needs to come from the top.
Rotating leadership and term limits tend to promote diversity in the workplace. Instead, say: “Let's value and give everyone the opportunity. Individuals and organizations tend to grow with rotating leadership.”
