Thanks to the staggering growth in cases in Beijing, it has become increasingly difficult to get hold of essential medical supplies. Check out the testimony of Amy Liu, a Chinese citizen who felt sick last Sunday:
“It's quite ridiculous. I can't find any human thermometers on the delivery apps," said Amy. “The only one I could find was for vet work.”
She ended up paying about 87 yuan, the equivalent of $12.50, to have the thermometer delivered to a friend's house. Even though Amy's story had a “happy ending”, if things remain as they are, it is very likely that the situation will become more chaotic.
According to Li Ang, the spokesman for the Beijing Municipal Health Commission, about 22,000 citizens came to the city's fever clinics. This number is 16 times higher than the previous week. Since the sudden change to the “zero covid” policy last week, Beijing has found itself in the midst of an even bigger wave of infections.
Amy Liu added, "You can hardly find Covid-19-related drugs in online stores, and delivery takes much longer than before." That alone makes us sure that the situation in the Chinese capital is really worrying.
