If you wear new clothes before washing? check out the consequences!

This is a very serious debate that can cause many disagreements. When buying one clothing, do you wash before use? Is leaving the store with the new item and wearing it right away really a good option? If you've never had this doubt, know that your hygiene may be at risk.

Clothes leave the store looking great, ironed and smelling good, but what's behind it the eyes can't see. Perhaps the purchased piece could have been bought and exchanged by someone, then returned to the store to be displayed by someone else. That same beautiful, clean and well-pressed T-shirt received the touch of several others people to know if the fabric was really comfortable, when people don't go to the changing table to try it on.

“Clothes are teeming with various types of organisms from the time of their production to the time of their sale”, that is what says Philip Tierno, PhD and clinical professor of microbiology at New York University's Grossman School of Medicine York.

What do new clothes hide?

The first reason clothes should be washed before use is for contact dermatitis. It's a type of eczema, caused by an itchy skin that can cause major discomfort. Dermatitis occurs when the skin is exposed to harsh chemicals or dyes that are put into clothing during production.

According to senior design professor Frances Kozen, who is focused on textile science, clothes go through a process of treatment during production, such as stain-resistant chemicals, bleaching, anti-mold agents, and others. Clothes can be accompanied by excess dye, especially darker pieces that can cause skin reactions.

“Residual chemicals from any of these treatments can remain on the fabric, and since clothing labels don’t identify the chemicals used in production or the types of dyes, it is best to wash to reduce exposure,” said the Professor Kozen.

The teacher's tip is to wash the clothes for 25 minutes in hot water and then rinse with a good amount of water. Before, make sure that the piece can be washed with hot water, as some require that the water be especially cold.

Clothes should be washed, even if dyes are not present. You simply have no idea where clothes may have gone, and your health is at stake.
