On the border of Brazil and Uruguay, in Rio Grande do Sul, a site for the giant sloth was found in Santana do Livramento. The shelter is called a paleotoca by the scientists and its creation may date back 200,000 years. The prehistoric shelter registers three meters high, 35 meters deep and three meters wide.

In addition to the discovery of the sloth shelter, a nearby location was also identified as the burrow of a giant armadillo, which may be from ten to 30 thousand years old. The extinction of giant sloths occurred 50,000 years ago, which indicates that giant armadillos took over the place shortly afterwards.

The paleoburrows were shelters for prehistoric animals, such as the giant armadillo and the aforementioned sloth. Such discoveries are common to the south. Most of these structures were made by animals fleeing predators.

Discovery of the paleoburrow

In Rio Grande do Sul, the place was called by the population as “tiger's lair”. It was expected to be an ancient burrow created by animals. It is located in the Almadén Winery, belonging to the Miolo Wine Group. Soon, the shelter will be able to be part of the tourist route that is already released inside the place.

Geologist Serlécio Guilherme Pinz has 25 years of experience in the area and was hired by the Miolo Group. In the paleoburrow, the researcher found evidence that it was not just a cave on site. According to him, the claw marks on the wall were the first signs that the place was a shelter for giant sloths. In an interview with EXAME, the researcher provided details about the discovery:

“Another point that drew attention is the dome format. Native peoples used to make similar structures, but with a more oval shape. There are indications that it must be a female, because there are spaces on the sides indicating that it would not be alone inside the burrow skin, probably with babies”, said the geologist who concluded by saying that the place was useful for the animals to sleep in that era.
