Now it's official: World Meteorological Organization confirms the El Niño phenomenon

According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), El Niño was declared earlier this month. The climate phenomenon is characterized by the anomalous heating of the waters of the Equatorial Pacific Ocean, which causes even higher temperatures.

The phenomenon happens for the first time in seven years and, as experts say, it is predicted that it will influence the climate by 90% in the coming months of 2023. This climatic event can have significant impacts in several regions of the world, including Brazil.

As highlighted by the Secretary General of WMO, Prof. Petteri Taalas, the beginning of El Niño brings with it concerns of record breaking temperatures and an increase in extreme heat in many parts of the world, both on land and in the ocean.

The WMO noted that, since February of this year, meteorologists began to detect complications that indicated the arrival of the weather phenomenon in 2023.

What can we expect from the El Niño phenomenon?

This official WMO declaration serves as a wake-up call to governments, highlighting the importance of mobilize effective strategies to mitigate the impacts of El Niño on the ecosystems, economies and health of the population.

As explained by the organization, El Niño is a climatic phenomenon that occurs, on average, every two to seven years, lasting almost a year. After seven years, we will experience above-average weather effects.

According to a WMO report released in May, there is a 98% probability forecast that at at least one of the next five years could be the hottest on record, all because of the phenomenon climatic.

That would surpass the record set in 2016 when an exceptionally strong El Niño occurred. The anticipation of this El Niño event underscores the concern about rising global temperatures and highlights the need for action to address climate change and minimize its impacts on the planet.
