2.6 million doses of CoronaVac were purchased for children

Last Saturday, January 7, the Ministry of Health reported having purchased 2.6 million doses of one of the vaccines against Covid-19, CoronaVac. The vaccine is produced by the Butantan Institute together with Sinovac, a Chinese pharmaceutical company.

This vaccine suffered some attacks when it was prepared in 2020. At the time, the Federal Government was very reluctant to acquire these vaccines. People even spread information - which was never proven true - about CoronaVac, just because it originated in China.

Something that may have influenced the stance of then-president Jair Bolsonaro is that the former governor of São Paulo, João Dória (PSDB), was “the godfather” of CoronaVac. During the pandemic, the former governor and the former president were in a conflict motivated by differing opinions and positions regarding measures to combat Covid-19.

Last Friday, the 6th, the current secretary of Health Surveillance, Ethel Maciel, informed that there were no doses of the vaccine against Covid-19 in sufficient quantity to meet the age group consisting of children from 6 months to 11 years deity. According to the secretary, the previous government did not leave enough supply for this group.

In this way, the Ministry of Health, on the same day, signed an amendment regarding the acquisition of 750,000 doses of the immunizer. Another contract should be signed soon, seeking to guarantee the necessary volume referring to 2.6 million doses of the vaccine.

Ethel Maciel also stated that she will have meetings with the company Pfizer, seeking to receive children's vaccine doses more quickly. The Ministry of Health reported, in a note released on Saturday, 7, that “it continues in negotiations with the laboratories to guarantee more immunizations for the public childish as soon as possible".

The ministry intends to negotiate the necessary volume of doses in January of this year. As pointed out by the secretary, 3.5 million doses must be received from Pfizer and directed to children from 6 months to 4 years old, however another 4.5 million vaccines will be reserved for those from 5 to 11 years old age.
