The event took place on February 7th in the morning. These birds typically breed in the northern United States and Canada. However, they travel south during the winter in Mexico.
Birds fall from the sky in Mexico
The birds are of the species Yellow-headed Grauna, whose scientific name is Xanthocephalus, and they tend to migrate from Northern Canada to Northern Mexico. In the video, part of the flock of birds flies upwards again. However, many animals remain unconscious on the ground.
Area residents reported that dozens of birds died as they collided with the ground. As for the reason for the collision, some hypotheses have already been raised, but there is still no conclusion.
Possible reasons why birds fall
A veterinarian examined the dead birds and advised that they could have died as a result of the inhaling pollutants, such as toxic smoke from wood burning stoves, which can be lethal to humans animals.
In addition, another hypothesis raised is that the animals could have been electrocuted after perching on cables of possibly overloaded power lines. The birds will undergo tests in order to establish the cause of death. Meanwhile, the investigation is ongoing.
Could a “driving accident” have happened to these birds?
Some users of social networks expressed themselves and considered the idea that the leaders of the flock of birds got confused and, consequently, caused a possible “driving accident”.
The theory received support from an ecologist at the UK Center for Ecology and Hydrology, Dr. Richard Broughton. According to him, the deviation could have been caused by a predatory bird, however, it is not possible to see any bird of prey in the recorded footage.
Thus, the explanation would be that the birds fell while being chased by a hawk, and then had to descend. However, as mentioned, analyzes are still ongoing to confirm what really motivated the accident.
