Several problems interfere in this process, but some exert a greater influence than expected, as is the case of the Covid-19 pandemic in relation to basic education in the country.

The challenges of Brazilian basic education
Basic education is fundamental for the development of a country, as it is through it that citizens acquire the necessary skills and competencies for personal and professional development.
However, according to data released by the IBGE, more than half of Brazilians aged 25 or over have not completed basic education. That is, around 69.5 million adults.
Of the individuals belonging to this group, most do not attend school due to the need to work.
The impact of the pandemic on Brazilian basic education
The Covid-19 pandemic has further aggravated the situation of basic education in Brazil. Due to the restrictive measures of lockdown, schools were closed for about 260 days (almost 9 months), between 2019 and 2021.
Consequently, the result was not at all pleasant, since school dropouts increased by 171% in the same period.
Addressing impacts is recorded in a book
Given this scenario, the Organization of Ibero-American States for Education, Science and Culture in Brazil (OEI) in partnership with the Roberto Marinho Foundation decided to portray the subject in a book.
With the title “Education on the agenda: Challenges of Basic Education in Brazil”, the work presents a diagnosis of the problems of basic education in the country. In addition, it also suggests public policies for the new state and federal administrations from 2023 onwards.
In all, 25 experts participated in the preparation of the book, which is divided into four parts. In them, there are approaches that range from the analysis of obstacles in basic education to the implementation of the new secondary education and the future of Brazilian education.
The development time of the work was 1 year and 4 months, with the main objective of functioning as support for the new decisions of the public power in the area of education.
According to the president of OEI, Raphael Callou, every beginning of management is a moment of debate for correction of the educational path and the book should be seen as a possibility of aid in solving the problem.
Proposals presented in the work
As previously mentioned, the book presents some proposals to deal with this challenge.
Among them are: development of digital skills, collaboration between federative entities, improvement of national assessment systems and student preparation actions for changes technologies.
