Usually, those who have gone through layoffs can be a little more hardened, so they already know how to recognize what is about to happen and how to react to it. The real problem is younger people with no experience, many of them in their first real job.

What are the signs that you are about to be fired?

  • Layoffs in other departments

In general, larger companies are more likely to lay off employees in large batches rather than one at a time. So if half the people in one department leave the company carrying all their stuff, chances are it will happen in other departments.

Because of this, it's important to pay close attention to the end of each fiscal quarter, usually when most layoffs take place.

  • Things start to look weird

It's kind of hard to explain, but anyone who has been through a company in crisis knows how different and strange the climate seems, accompanied by a certain tension in the air. This happens because a supervisor, for example, already knows who will be fired in the next month, so the interaction ends up changing a lot, depending on your personality. Even keeping the secret, you can perceive some cues through eye contact, less speech in formal meetings, etc.

  • End of long term plans

When companies stop making long-term plans and talking about them in meetings, that's definitely not a good sign. When your bosses know about layoffs long before you do, they're much more likely to cancel planning meetings instead of holding them among employees.
