A contemporary of Cornelius Celsus, his book was one of Rome's contributions to medical science and it is worth mentioning that the author makes a great apology for the use of medicines, but he was influenced by magic and beliefs folk songs. He was an enthusiastic collector of recipes, obtained from the most varied sources and by the most diverse and even shady ways. His book can be considered as the first of the pharmacopoeias.
The composition of the medicaments in De compositione medicamentum was approved by Emperor Claudius. He was also a physician to the Emperor's third wife, Mesalina, who despite her wanton behavior apparently relationship with this doctor remained strictly professional, contrary to what happened with his colleague Vecio Brave. He died at age 40, relatively young, in Rome.
