How to store canned fruits and keep them tasty?
Sugar is great for helping food preserve, but just like canning itself, it ends up compromising the flavor. Thus, a fruit may not be as tasty in the canned and syrup version as it is in natura. However, with a few simple tips, it is possible to make these foods delicious.
Lemon juice to improve the taste of canned fruits
Squeeze a lemon and, after opening the can of fruit, add a few drops. With that, the citric acid present in the lemon will be useful to balance and disguise the sweet taste of the fruit in syrup. You can use this tip on fruits like pears, peaches, plums or even pineapple and mango.
Change the fruit container after opening the can
You can store the fruit in the can itself, however, this requires some care to avoid the proliferation of bacteria and fungi. Therefore, an alternative is to use a plastic film to cover the opening of the can.
On the other hand, leaving fruits in the can can leave them with a metallic aftertaste, so it's best to change containers. You can use a plastic or glass jar with a tight-fitting lid.
How long can you store canned fruit?
The expiry date must always be respected. For this reason, check the packaging for how long the fruits can be consumed after opening the can. Generally, fruits in these conditions can be kept in the refrigerator for a period of 5 days to a week, but be sure to check the product label to be sure.
If you have chosen to change containers, write down when the fruits can be consumed and then stick them in the pot they are in. This is very important to avoid food poisoning.
