The license is divided into several categories, depending on the type of vehicle the driver is authorized to drive, such as motorcycles, cars, trucks, buses, among others. To obtain a CNH, you must be of legal age, know how to read and write, present the necessary documents, undergo psychological and medical evaluations, in addition to taking theoretical and practical driving tests vehicular.

The categories of the National Driver's License (CNH) are divided according to the type of vehicle that the driver is authorized to drive.
- Category A: qualifies the driver to drive motorcycles, scooters, mopeds, tricycles and motorized quadricycles;
- Category B: entitles the driver to drive motor vehicles, with a total gross weight of up to 3,500 kg, and capacity maximum of 8 passengers, excluding the driver (examples: passenger cars, vans, SUVs, pickup trucks, among others);
- Category C: entitles the driver to drive cargo vehicles with a total gross weight of more than 3,500 kg, and maximum capacity of up to 8 passengers, excluding the driver (examples: trucks, vans, among others;);
- Category D: enables the driver to drive passenger transport vehicles with capacity for more than 8 seats, excluding the driver (examples: minibuses and passenger vans);
- Category E: enables the driver to drive vehicles with a combination of coupled units, such as trucks with a trailer or semi-trailer, or bus with trailer (examples: articulated bus, truck pulling two trailers and car pulling trailer).
Motorcycle models that do not need a license
There are some vehicles that do not fit into the above categories and can be driven without a driver's license. Some motorcycle models that do not require a driver's license are:
- mobile: two-wheeled vehicles, with a maximum speed of 50 km/h, which may run on fuel or electricity;
- Scooter: two-wheeled motor vehicle. It is also known as a scooter or wasp;
- Game: it is a scooter produced by the Japanese automaker Yamaha;
- E-bike: vehicle characterized by having a maximum of 350 watts of power and a speed of up to 25 km/h. It has no throttle. In addition to not needing a license, the e-bike does not need a license plate.
