Essentially a pianistic Polish composer born in Zelazowa Wola, near Warsaw, author of preludes, nocturnes, studies and polonaises admired all over the world. Son of a French immigrant from Lorraine and a Polish woman of aristocratic origin. Encouraged by his mother, who was a pianist, he proved to be a prodigy boy and, at the age of eight, he was already a perfect performer and rehearsed his first compositions while still a student at the Warsaw Conservatory.
He distinguished himself as a concert pianist for piano and orchestra in Vienna (1829) and left Poland (1830) for a study trip. With political problems in Warsaw, he settled in Paris (1831), where he maintained a troubled romance (1836-1848) with writer George Sand. During the revolution (1848) he was in London, but weakened by pulmonary tuberculosis, he returned to Paris the same year, where he died the following year.
Influenced by the music of Bach, his favorite musician, and by the melody of Bellini, he was an artist of an aristocratic nature, who performed his compositions in select auditoriums, with rare appearances before the general public, he created a meager work, with delicate nuances, but won a huge popular audience. He composed a valuable work with preludes, nocturnes, waltzes, mazurkas, Polish patriots, ballads, sonatas, funeral marches, etc. and in his last year of life he showed dissatisfaction with his work, even destroying many pages, and died in Paris, France.
