How does the new iPhone scam work?
Who brought the situation and the alert to light was the user “navalsquat” on Reddit. According to him, after the cell phone is stolen, a person contacts the owner, through the number previously configured in iCloud security, saying that he bought it without knowing that it was someone else's.
Scammers say they are concerned, because the person's data is still recorded on the phone and claim that they accidentally activated it. Then they ask her to remove her iPhone from her Apple ID, so the information won't be left lying around.
Make no mistake: this is the scam. The moment you get the stolen phone out of iCloud, it's unlocked for the scammer to do whatever they want. He can sell the device or even use it for his own benefit.
What if I don't remove it?
If you choose not to remove your stolen iPhone, it basically becomes a paperweight for scammers. The most he can do is take it apart to sell some parts.
Stolen iPhone: Now What?
If you've had your phone stolen, don't despair. The first thing to do is go to the Find My app on whatever Apple device you're signed in to. If not, enter your icloud on any computer. After logging in, mark your iPhone as “Lost”.
During the process, you can leave a contact to alert – whoever finds the phone – that it has an owner. If the device is connected to the internet, you can see the location of the last time it was online.
With this information in hand, you can file a police report, as they will handle the case. By no means remove stolen iPhone from your iCloud even if you have not recovered it.
