A scenario of unemployment, economic uncertainty and high competitiveness in the labor market have made young people in China give up on achieving their goals and other dreams. For them, all the effort will be in vain, because it makes no sense to make an effort and not manage to get a job or even buy a house in the big Chinese urban centers.

Tang ping, bai lan and as little effort as possible

The reaction of young Chinese people to this scenario of uncertainty and frustration with the future is called tang ping, which in Portuguese means “lying down”. The term has become so popular in China that it was one of the top 10 most searched words in China in 2021. The philosophy behind the term tang ping is to do the minimum during working hours and reject any excessive workload or extra demands and reflects the disappointment and stress perceived by young people adults.

Another term related to this phenomenon has also gained recognition in China and is called ban lan, whose translation means to let it rot. The background of ban lan is the refusal to make an effort to grow in life because they see no reason to do so, reflecting hopelessness for future improvement.

Economic scenario is the main reason for disillusionment among young people

China is marked by high competitiveness and high demands both in the labor market and in studies. However, as a result of the uncertainties caused by COVID-19, young people are finding it increasingly difficult to enter the job market. To get an idea of the scenario, among young Chinese up to 24 years old, the unemployment rate reached 20% in July this year, against 5.6% of the national unemployment rate.

Faced with this scenario, some people report a search for escape from reality, which translates into lying down all day as a way to of forgetting reality and going against the definition of success that requires buying an apartment, a good job and setting up a family.
