What is tocophobia?
Perhaps you are not familiar with this term, but it is very likely that you know a woman who suffers from tocophobia. It is the fear and panic condition of getting pregnant and giving birth that can trigger severe anxiety attacks and the development of panic syndrome. As a consequence, these women are less willing to have a child.
Furthermore, we can highlightphobia in two types and that will represent two stages. First, we have women who have never had a pregnancy experience. So the fear is mainly related to the lack of knowledge of the process. On the other hand, we have those who developed fear after a pregnancy experience.
Generally, the second type occurs in women who have experienced some type of obstetric violence or had an unwanted or complicated pregnancy. It can also be common in women who have suffered a miscarriage, so the fear is also related to the possibility of losing another baby.
Tocophobia during the Covid-19 pandemic
A study carried out in the United States and published in the journalEvolution, Medicine and Public Health, explored this fear in American women.
For this, more than 1,800 women were interviewed who were on average 31 years old. Among the interviewees were both those who had the experience of pregnancy and those who had not. As a result, it was found that six out of ten women, or 62%, have tocophobia.
Through the results, it was possible to identify that the Covid-19 pandemic played an important role in the development of this fear. After all, during this period, companions would not be allowed at the time of delivery and there was a danger of contaminating the baby in its first moments of life.
