Confirmation of the increase in life expectancy of Brazilians came with the new publication by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The data were collected by the Census and studied in detail by the agency.
What is the new life expectancy of Brazilians?
According to the IBGE, the life expectancy of Brazilians rose from 76.8 years to 77 years. The novelty was published in the 2021 Complete Mortality Table, in the Official Gazette (DOU) of last Friday, November 25. You can access the document here.
It is worth emphasizing that deaths due to Covid-19 of recent years.
This document is published every year and gives estimates of life expectancy at exact ages up to age 80. Data from all regions of Brazil are analyzed and the information is broken down by gender and age.
The publication confirms that our rate is on the rise. 11 years ago, the median age was 74.1. See how much we've grown since then!
- 2012: 74.6 years
- 2013: 74.9 years
- 2014: 75.2 years
- 2015: 75.5 years
- 2016: 75.8 years
- 2017: 76 years old
- 2018: 76.3 years
- 2019: 76.6 years
- 2020: 76.8 years
To get an idea, in 1940 the average life expectancy of Brazilians was only 45.5 years. If we do a basic calculation, in more or less a century we managed to raise this estimate by 31.5 years.
Why is this data important?
The life expectancy of a population is important because it is a social indicator to assess people's quality of life. In addition, the data is used to make decisions about Social Security and pension calculations.
Also, it is important to know the correct way to read these numbers. The life expectancy of 77 years is valid for those born in Brazil in 2021. This does not mean that those who were already full age that year will die.
According to the IBGE, those who are 77 years old today are expected to live at least another 11.4 years. Ufa!
