Students from Educa Estadual Fortunato Pandolfi Arnoni, located in Mauá, in Greater São Paulo, have been promoting food education and combating food waste since 2018. Students from the 1st to 5th grades of elementary school, full-time students at the institution, participate in activities that offer students a healthier eating option. Through the PDDE program, the earmarked budget can be applied to the school.
The institution monitors the meals on a daily basis throughout the period in which the young people are at school and applies the food re-education work. During meals, students gain knowledge about what healthy eating is and learn what nutrients foods provide.

Students receive new incentive to study food
The project has something much greater than the consumption of food. It allows students to have access to planting. The school unit has a vegetable garden offered by the Direct Money at School Program (PDDE), which manages the funds sent by the Department of Education to reach schools. The PDDE Paulista was created in 2019 with the aim of offering financial resources to public institutions in the state.
By getting in touch with the vegetable garden, students are able to learn a little more about the plants and animals.
In this way, the importance of water and light are apprehended, as well as questions about the environment in which they live, always relating all this knowledge to everyday life. There is also an incentive for them to get to know plant species, acquiring information about nature and living beings.
William Santos Nascimento, director of the school unit, explained how the new opportunity came about:
“We saw the importance of using the spaces to develop practices related to natural science classes, where it will be possible to contemplate skills related to fauna and flora, developing knowledge related to life, evolution, Earth, universe, among others”, commented.
