With the 2nd World War the number of these dogs began to decrease and, after an illness, the breed almost became extinct in Japan.

However, the breed reestablished itself and gained space around the world, nowadays its popularity is only increasing.

Characteristics and what the dogs of the Shiba house look like

The Shiba resembles a fox, it is small but muscular: it is around 33-43 cm tall and can reach a maximum weight of 11 kg. Furthermore, their ears are pointed and raised.

It can appear in the following colorations:

  • Reddish-brown;
  • Black;
  • Shades of brown;
  • Cream;
  • White.

Its fur is smooth and soft and – in all colors of the breed – we can find white hairs on its face that follow to the neck, paws, chest, belly and underside of the tail.

Behavior

The Shiba is known as the little Akita precisely because it is very loyal to its family. He is agile and wary of strangers, making a great guard dog.

With those they know, these dogs tend to be playful and affectionate, but will need a strong handler.

It is an intelligent and independent dog breed, so it is a little difficult to teach this breed tricks. Thus, some people consider them stubborn.

The Shiba also loves to “take possession” of some objects, so the dog will have a favorite chair and a corner of the sofa that he considers his own.

They usually get along well with other animals, as long as they have been socialized since they were puppies. Furthermore, as they have a hunting instinct, it may not be a good idea to introduce small animals (such as rabbits, hamsters, etc.) into their environment.

The price charged by certified sellers ranges from R$4 to R$8 thousand for a Shiba puppy. Apart from this initial amount, you also need to pay for vaccines, consultations, food, in addition to providing a good space for this animal and spending time with it.

So, it is worth considering these previous topics before purchasing a Shiba, because despite being very cute, it needs care (like all animals).
