Japan government plans long-term work for foreigners

The Government of Japan plans to expand the industry so that foreign workers can work in different sectors. The proposal was announced last Monday, the 24th, at a meeting with the Liberal Democratic Party. Until then, foreigners can only work in the Type 2 sector, with a temporary and indefinite stay in the country.

The shift to foreigners was motivated by the low demand for jobs by the Japanese, influenced by the birth rate that has been decreasing. The planned jobs for foreigners aim to allow them to live in the country legally, starting to access other sectors of the local industry.

Japan will allow greater access for foreign workers

Type 2 jobs are related to civil and shipbuilding, but now part of the plan government to expand the workforce to 11 more options for trained professionals, which already fits in Type 2. The proposal presented at the meeting with the Liberal Party aims to approve the plan for this year, scheduled for the month of June.

Japan's rules, introduced in 2019, allow Type 1 jobs for workers with lower skill levels and Type 2 jobs for professional workers. The February report disclosed that there are 146,000 foreign workers in Type 1 and only 10 workers in Type 2.

Only those who work in Type 2 can stay in Japan renewing their work status, being able to take their family to the country, which only allows both sectors of work. Category 1 work allows workers to stay in the country for just five years, covering 12 industry sectors.

The planning being discussed will allow service category 2 to include cleaning services, beverage and food manufacturing, machinery production and machine parts production. For the time being, the proposal is still under analysis and may soon be expanded to address the low birth rate in the country.
