Disconnected PCs' Internal Speakers May Facilitate Hacking

The School of Cybersecurity at the University of Korea, in the country's capital, discovered information that could facilitate hacking and theft of personal data. According to the information, the PC's internal speakers, when disconnected from the internet, can report simple data to access mobile devices that are nearby.

The computer and other devices, even without an internet connection, become the target of internal action. In the experiment carried out at the university in Seoul, Morse code information was used to be transmitted at a distance of about 1.5 meters. They discovered that they could access the smartphones or notebooks that were closer.

In testing, they used a Linux Ubuntu 20.04 computer and the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3. Making use of Morse code and using the word “covert”, the experts were able to access the device that was 50 centimeters away.

With the non-binary code, they were able to reach a greater distance, of 1.5 meters. With 50 centimeters, they managed to access 100 ms and with 1.5 meters they managed to access 50 ms.

The whole action will depend on malware that can access personal information on the device, just being entered once. The virus is also able to change the sound frequency on the device, which is not noticeable without handling another tool.

‘Casper’: Password Attack and Theft

The attack was named 'Casper', capable of revealing a strong password in exactly three seconds. The inefficiency was only present with larger files, such as a 10 KB file, taking more than 60 minutes to be sent, not counting interference.

The researchers came to the conclusion that the attack works through ultrasound only against some systems. Despite not accessing the files, the attack can be effective with digitized systems and can grant access to spies and data theft.

Devices that have been deemed “sensitive” may remove the internal speakers that are located on motherboards. If the method is not possible, it is recommended to use filters that prevent ultrasound access.
