According to the website's administrators, they received threats from hackers who, in August, claimed to have invaded the platform. With all the data available, the criminals said they would not leak the information, as long as an amount in bitcoins was paid as a ransom. But unfortunately, even with the payment, the story did not end well.

Through an e-mail, Open Subtitles administrators received information that the site had been invaded by a group of hackers. As they themselves stated on the page's forum, the team immediately agreed to pay a high amount in bitcoins demanded to rescue the data.

Still in the email, the hackers explained that access to the page was possible due to a low security password belonging to a SuperAdmin. After managing to hack the password, the criminals were able to access a script with the name of the users, from which the data was removed. However, the hacker said he was willing to delete all information, such as name, email, passwords and history, as long as the ransom amount was paid. That's why the site's team members decided to give up the ransom.

leaked data

What nobody expected, after the payment was made, was that the data would still be leaked, as happened now in January. More than 7 million users had their names, passwords, IP numbers and other information spread across the internet.

With the leak, Open Subtitles website administrators said they were taking appropriate measures and working on more effective security measures. Furthermore, they stated that they learned that one should never do business with a hacker.

Unfortunately, learning came the hard way, as the administrators themselves pointed out. Thus, it is up to website owners to be more attentive to data leaks, as all of us access the internet daily. And if this article was useful to you, don't forget to share it with your friends!
