New species of orchid – Maxillaria anacatalina-portillae
The species was described by Polish orchidologists in partnership with an Ecuadorian company that works with the cultivation, research and supply of orchids. As a result, this collaboration served to identify the plant, which has very showy flowers with an intense yellow color.
Why is the species already threatened with extinction?
Maxillaria is already considered critically endangered because its natural habitat has been devastated by activities and by the effects of climate change, which are also caused by human interference in the resources of the nature.
Orchids are also widely used in industry
Orchids belong to the Orchidaceae family, which is one of the largest existing plant families, and has more than 35,000 species. In this sense, their collectors are called orchidologists, and these plants are also used for several other purposes, in addition to serving as ornaments.
Some orchids are for industrial use, as is the case with Vanilla, which is part of vanilla production. Jumellea is used in the production of tobacco and perfumes. That is, these are very important plants.
