Ribeira, who has followed a vegan diet, also known as strict vegetarianism, since 2011, has also raised vegan daughters Seren, 13, and Ellie, 12.
However, as they mature, girls develop their own personality and this includes making choices different from those presented at home. And based on that desire, the girls decided to expand their taste buds and include animal foods in their diets.
For the mother, the decision was difficult to accept, because veganism, in her opinion, is a political stance. However, Luana defends the autonomy of children and knows that this phase of life is full of discoveries. For this reason, they reached an unusual agreement.
As the girls have not yet reached the age of majority and have no income, Luana had an interesting idea to not finance directly to the animal exploitation industry: When girls wish to eat non-vegan options, they must purchase food with the own allowance.
The two sisters receive the equivalent of R$495 a month, corresponding to 80 pounds sterling. And, according to Luana, approximately half of the amount is used to purchase food of animal origin.
Is a vegan diet safe for children?
Those who choose to follow a vegan diet should seek medical and nutritional follow-up. This is because, the suppression of certain foods of animal origin makes these people need to measure adequately levels of vitamins and other minerals in the blood to, if necessary, add supplements vitamins.
The most common deficiencies in vegetarian and vegan people are the reduction of vitamin B12, iron, zinc and calcium. So, parents should make sure that their children are consuming the proper amount of vitamins to receive all possible nutrients.
With care, and paying attention to the amount of protein ingested daily, the vegan diet is still a safer option for children, according to study held in Canada in 2022.
