Starting in July, Netflix will ban sharing passwords and accounts

A Netflix is changing streaming platform rules and set a deadline to ban password sharing. The plan is to stop users who hold the account from sharing accounts with other people who do not live in the same household.

The measure has been announced since October 2022, as indicated by the newspaper The Wall Street, projecting to put an end to the practice of sharing passwords. According to data presented to the newspaper at the time, around 100 million viewers of the platform used the service with other people's passwords.

In 2019, the measure had been considered by the company, but they decided to postpone the proposal after the boom in new subscriptions in 2021 and 2022, during the covid-19 pandemic. Now, therefore, the measure is being implemented by Netflix, as user frames received a drop in early 2021.

Shortly after the cancellation record, a result of the pandemic boom, tests to ban sharing began in 2021, with Latin American countries, indicating that the guest user would need the holder's authorization to have access to the contents. After these tests, Netflix announced that the measures would be applied in 2023.

Netflix will ban password reset in the United States

For now, the proposal is already happening in Portugal, Spain, Canada and New Zealand, as guided by the portal The Verge. Therefore, users who do not live with the account holder will not have access to the platform or the holder must pay an extra amount to allow it.

The measure will now be adopted in the United States and it is not known for sure what the fixed amount will be charged, but the change has already been announced by local shareholders.

cancellations

Prior to the effective change, Netflix faced the highest number of subscriber churns. In the United States and Canada, there were about 1.3 million subscription losses. Password sharing also received a negative diagnosis in 2019, when experts indicated it would be a problem for the mighty Netflix.
