Leg of Thescelosaurus was found in the US

Researchers may have discovered what is considered a “rare gem” of paleontology. Bones corresponding to what would be the leg of a herbivorous and bipedal dinosaur, known by paleontologists as thescelosaurus.

Very well preserved and still with remains of skin, evidence reveals that the animal may have been dead for 66 years. millions of years ago, on the same day that the asteroid impact supposedly wiped out the dinosaurs from Earth.

Because of the lack of bite wounds and other signs similar to predator attacks, there is no sign that the Thescelosaurus was killed by another dinosaur or disease. The leg found is perfectly preserved, even with pieces of scaly skin.

However, what scientists believe is that the cause of death was the

wave derived from asteroid impact. The dating was performed from debris that rained down for a specific time shortly after the asteroid impact.

The fossil was found at the Tanis Paleontological Site, located in the state of North Dakota. A city that is about 3,000 km from the place where the asteroid is believed to have fallen, near the Yucatán Peninsula, in Mexico.

Due to the impact caused, a tsunami was originated, and became responsible for the destruction and burial of aquatic and terrestrial animals.

In addition to the leg of the thescelosaurus, a turtle impaled by a wooden stake was found; very small mammals in their burrows; skin of a triceratops and a pterosaur embryo still inside its egg.
The leg was considered the first direct evidence of how the asteroid actually affected all life on Earth. The asteroid is believed to be approximately 10 kilometers in diameter and was responsible for a major mass extinction.
