Birthday loot scams: here's how to protect yourself

The birthday withdrawal is a modality offered by Caixa Econômica Federal, which allows the worker to withdraw part of the value of the Guarantee Fund for Length of Service (FGTS) in the month of your birthday. However, if he opts for this withdrawal and is fired, he will only receive the amount referring to the termination fine, and not the full amount. This modality is up to the worker to choose whether he wants to join or not. There are also qualified financial institutions that can make loans to workers using the birthday withdrawal as collateral.

Lately users have reported that they are suffering blows with this modality, which are similar to those that happened with the extraordinary service. The scammer gets a name and a CPF number, registers that person in Caixa with another phone number and email, creates an account and carries out the withdrawal or loan.

Unfortunately, the scam is only identified when the worker who has not yet registered with Caixa tries to access some application offered by the bank and realizes that your CPF is already registered, however, the phone number and email are unknown. You also need to be careful with calls where the scammer pretends to be a Caixa employee and requests personal data to be able to enter the account and move the values.

With this, the bank directs the victim to file a dispute request at one of the agencies, having the CPF and a photo document with them. There is also availability to be answered by telephone, on the numbers 4004-0104, for metropolitan regions or capitals, and 0800 1040104, for other regions, in addition to the FGTS application.

If the worker recognizes that there is an effective withdrawal that was not requested, the deadline for completing the calculation is 60 calendar days from the moment the occurrence was formalized. If undue withdrawal is found, the amounts will be returned to the FGTS account and the registered data will be updated based on the information provided by the worker.

Check out how to avoid scams:

  • Use only the official means of the bank to obtain the information and access to the necessary services;
  • Do not share passwords, login users and personal data;
  • Do not respond to calls, SMS and e-mails on behalf of Caixa, as the bank points out that it does not contact you requesting personal information;
  • Do not make available or save bank passwords on cell phones or computers;
  • Do not accept help from strangers with applications or even within bank branches. If necessary, contact an agency employee.
