How to plant leeks?
First, pay attention to the season in which you are planting the vegetable. The leek is a plant that develops better in mild climates, with temperatures ranging from around 13° to 25°C. Also, choose a very bright location, because leeks need at least 3 hours of sun a day.
The step by step is very simple, and about 120 to 140 days after planting, the leeks will be ready to be harvested.
- With the leek seeds in hand, place them in a seedbed 1 centimeter deep. Use about 3 seeds per sowing hole and cover them with fertilized soil.
- Leave in direct sunlight for at least 3 hours a day.
- Water them every day with a spray bottle until they gain strength and size to take the vegetable to its final planting location.
- If you want to plant more than one leek plant, leave a minimum spacing of 15 centimeters between them.
- Keep the planting soil always moist, without soaking. Remember that leek is a vegetable that likes to be extra chilly. So no leaving the earth dry!
- At harvest time, observe whether the vegetable stalk is white, firm and with very green top leaves. If so, it will be fit for consumption. To harvest, just pull the whole leek out of the soil it's planted in.
