Research proves that dogs can demonstrate more than we know

Takefumi Kikusui, a researcher at Azabu University, decided to study tears more deeply canines, after seeing a female dog that got teary-eyed while breastfeeding her newborns. This behavior led the scientist to associate crying with oxytocin, which is the popular “love hormone”.

The researcher was already aware that when the dog interacts with the tutor, both release oxytocin. So, he began to wonder if these animals have the ability to cry with happiness when seeing their owners, for example.

Thus came the research, which will be published in the journal Current Biology. To carry out the study, they divided the procedure into three phases, the first of which applied a special strip to the lower eyelid. of 18 dogs, which allowed comparing the volume of water produced during the day with the initial five minutes after the animals saw the owners.

Dogs cry and the amount of tears is definitive, says research

Scholars noticed that the amount of tears was actually greater when the dog's owner appeared, but not when unknown humans arrived. This has already started to bring about the idea that dogs can cry for joy, really.

After that, for the second phase, they applied a solution with oxytocin in the eyes of 22 dogs, the that caused them to produce more tears than the other group, who received only one placebo.

To finish the study, they showed photos of dogs to 74 human volunteers, some of the animals having teary eyes and others not. Based on the photos, humans had to identify on a 5-point scale how much they would like to take care of each animal. Most preferred the puppies that had wet eyes.

The explanation given by the researchers is that dogs can communicate with humans through eye contact, and that tears can provide a more protective behavior on the part of the tutors, which ends up being beneficial for the pets also.
