In the United States, during a call, a mother heard her daughter sobbing, until a man picked up the phone and demanded a ransom for the kidnapped one.
However, nothing was real: the “girl” was an AI clone and the kidnapping did not even exist. The event follows a line of thought that the greatest danger of Artificial Intelligence is passing itself off as real.
Scammers use AI voice cloning to conduct crimes
Scammers impersonate family members to create intimacy and achieve what is known as a bailout. To make it look even more real, they use AI cloning tools, which can be easily found on the internet.
In this specific case, the AI cloning of the daughter asked the mother to help her. The caregiver, in turn, was convinced that this was real and that her daughter really was being kidnapped. O scammer, who called from an unknown number, demanded up to $1 million.
However, we had a happy ending: the mother contacted her daughter and all went well. The case is under police investigation and highlights a strong concern about the use of the tool. In turn, AI-oriented companies are also working to minimize as much as possible.
In March, in the letter that asked for a pause in the AI experiment, its subscribers – including Elon Musk – already highlighted that “[...] Humanity can enjoy a prosperous future with AI. Having managed to create powerful AI systems, we can now enjoy an 'AI summer' in which we reap the fruits, we design these systems for the clear benefit of all and give society a chance to adapt."
