As of July 2023, the e-commerce giant, amazon, will stop selling books in e-book format in China. This already happened in 2019, when the company had already closed its platform that faced competition from powerful and very well-established rivals, Alibaba and JD.com. The reasons for the new decision were not given.

Amazon launched the Kindle service in China in 2013, as it bet on the potentially huge Asian market and a population adept at new technologies.
Amazon's e-bookstore remains open until June 30, 2023, according to reports, and customers will still be able to download books already purchased for a year beyond the stipulated deadline. The Kindle app will be removed from stores.
“We remain committed to our customers in China. As a global company, we periodically evaluate our offerings and make adjustments," said an Amazon spokesperson. “With our portfolio of businesses in China, we will continue to innovate and invest where we can add value for our customers,” he added.
According to some internal company documents, in 2018, China became the largest Kindle market on the planet, representing more than 40% of sales volume. Now, Amazon's main business in China will be in advertising and cloud services.
Finally, it is believed that Amazon's decision came due to the Chinese government's great efforts to increase control over the operations of the technology companies, which was also the reason for other Western companies to leave their activities in the country, such as LinkedIn, Yahoo and Airbnb.
