What sparked the rumors that Apple would buy Disney?
Speculation surrounding a possible deal between Apple and Disney dates back to 2006, when Disney acquired Pixar.
At the time, late Apple co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs was chairman and majority shareholder of Pixar, which led to him becoming a Disney board member as part of the deal. Since then, the idea of a merger between the two companies has been periodically discussed.
The discussion about this possibility gained momentum again when Bob Iger, a close friend of Steve Jobs, returned as CEO of Disney last November.
The relationship that existed between Jobs and Iger and the successful collaboration between Apple and Pixar in the past fueled speculation of a more meaningful partnership between the two companies.
Bob Iger, known for his negotiating skills, made major acquisitions during his tenure as CEO of Disney, including the purchase of Lucasfilm and Marvel.
Due to his successful negotiation history, there are expectations that Iger will want to leave his legacy with a major transaction, and rumors suggest he has already considered a deal with Apple in past.
In his 2019 autobiography titled “The Ride of a Lifetime,” Iger mentioned that he would have struck a deal between the companies had Steve Jobs still been alive. That statement, of course, sparked intense rumors.
Apple has shown interest in major acquisitions in the past and hasn't ruled out that possibility. While the company has previously taken a more cautious approach, avoiding an expansion excessive to become a company that offers everything, this mentality has evolved in the last years.
