The new structure is called SLYM, which stands for Subarachnoid Membrane Lymph Type. Scientists have described the structure of an unknown part of the brain.

Apparently, SLYM acts as a protective barrier, and as a kind of platform which serves to monitor infections and inflammation. The novelty was published by the journal Science, and was found by scientists from the Center for Translational Neuromedicine at the University of Rochester (USA) and the University of Copenhagen (Denmark).

If you don't know, the brain has three membranes called the meninges: the pia mater, the arachnoid mater and the dura mater. These tissues create a barrier between the central nervous system and the rest of the body.

In the pia mater and the arachnoid, there is an opening that is known as the subarachnoid space, filled with a cerebrospinal fluid. The material flows in and around the brain to help cushion it and serves as a source of nutrients.

This structure, discovered by the scientists, becomes the fourth membrane that is located in the subarachnoid space, above the pia mater, which is the innermost membrane. In addition to covering the organ, the new structure helps control the flow of cerebrospinal fluid by placing it in and out of the brain.

Scientists believe that SLYM must act as a kind of barrier between the liquid 'clean' cerebrospinal fluid, which enters the brain, and the 'dirty' cerebrospinal fluid, which leaves the organ, carrying waste products proteins. This explanation was given by neuroscientist Virginia Plá Requena, from the Center for Translational Neuromedicine at the University of Copenhagen and one of the authors of the study.

Well, they think this discovery is going to represent a new level of organization in the circulation of cerebrospinal fluid.

According to them, the presence of the membrane seems to confirm the sophisticated role that the fluid plays. plays in maintaining the brain's immune defenses and in transporting and eliminating toxic waste.
