A gastronomic look at art

Although Ernst de Witte is known for his culinary skills, it was during his last visit to the museum that he noticed the possible gastronomic error in Van Gogh's painting. His experience as a chef and his passion for the art led him to investigate further.

Convincing the Museum

Determined to clear up the misunderstanding, the chef prepared a detailed presentation to show the museum the truth behind the work.

Using his painting experience and culinary knowledge, Ernst highlighted the similarities between the heads of garlic portrayed in the painting and the real garlic, even identifying the lines that indicated the teeth.

Furthermore, he compared different species of onions depicted in other Van Gogh paintings to support his theory.

After consulting a biologist to obtain a second opinion, the museum agreed with Ernst's discovery and made the title change official in November 2022, including in the catalog that appears on the official website.

Pictures in Transformation

According to Artnet News, changes in the titles of pictures are common when disagreements arise about the elements represented.

In the case of painting by Van Gogh, this rectification came after nearly a century with an incorrect title, demonstrating the dynamic and ever-evolving nature of the art world.

A gastronomic tribute

Ernst's discovery not only changed the name of the work, but also inspired him to create a signature dish at his restaurant, Restaurant Feu, in Utrecht.

The specialty is cabbage accompanied by roasted garlic broth, cream of smoked garlic and a vinaigrette with touches of lemongrass, tarragon and absinthe, the favorite drink of the Dutch painter himself.
