In the 2023 special report on language study in Duolingo, some surprising trends were revealed. Noteworthy is the notable increase in users' interest in the Portuguese language, while Russian is no longer among the ten most studied languages.
English continues to lead the way as the most popular language among Duolingo students. In second place is Spanish, followed by French and German. The Japanese language closes the top 5 most studied languages on the platform.

Duolingo report reveals surprises for 2023
According to Duolingo, the increased interest in Portuguese is due to foreigners traveling to Portugal or choosing Brazil. The end of social distancing, generated by the pandemic, also increases interest in international travel.
This possibly led to a greater interest in learning the language as a way to prepare for commercial and cultural interactions in these countries.
Last year there was a 500% increase in the number of international tourists visiting Brazil compared to the year 2021.
Coincidentally, this increase was also observed by the Portuguese airline, which proves the statistics indicated by Duolingo.
Another surprise was the absence of the Russian language in the listing. The language has around 282 million speakers worldwide and has been among the top 10 searches since 2015, when Duolingo was launched.
This year, the Russian dropped to 11th place and it's the first time this has happened. According to the platform, this drop can be attributed to the war that started in 2022 between Russia and Ukraine.
