There are some dog breeds considered perfect for people…

Vicky Lai, an assistant professor of psychology and cognitive science in Arizona, used data from previous research on how brain processes the language. The research team initially intended to analyze and better understand how the brain understood language while the person was in a good mood, as opposed to a bad mood.

“Humor and language seem to be supported by different brain connections. But we have a single brain, and both factors are processed in the same brain, so there is a lot of interaction going on.” “We demonstrated that when people are in a negative mood, they are more careful and analytical. They analyze what is actually said in a text, not just relying on their knowledge of the world.”

How was research done on being moody and detail oriented?

To influence the mood of research participants, excerpts from a sad movie (Sophie's Choice) and a fun TV series (Friends) were used. Then their mood was checked, with the fun bits not showing much change in the volunteers' state of mind, while the sad ones caused a more negative mood.

Then, participants had to listen to several emotionally neutral audios with four-sentence stories, each containing a “key phrase”. Each of these key phrases was displayed on the volunteers' screens, one word at a time. While this was happening, the participants' brains were monitored.

In this way, it was possible to discover that when the participants were in a negative mood, the brain performed more functions related to the reanalysis of factors. “We demonstrated that humor matters, and perhaps when we are going to carry out some task, we should pay more attention to our mood”, highlighted the teacher.

Finally, she advises that “if we are in a bad mood, maybe we should do things that are more detail-oriented, like proofreading”.
