Know that, last Monday, the 3rd, the Secretariat of Finance and Planning (Sefaz-SP) announced the reimbursement of the IPVA for drivers who have stolen or stolen vehicles. The law has been in force in the state of São Paulo since 2008, guaranteeing the refund of the tax for those who registered the theft of the car.
As it is the return of the IPVA, the refund amount is similar to the tax paid by the driver when the crime happened, whether in the total or partial amount paid in that year. According to government information, around 38,000 vehicles will benefit from the IPVA law, guaranteeing reimbursement from April to May of this year.

Check the refund schedule
The amount related to the payment of the tribute will be available for withdrawal for two years. Therefore, between April and May, vehicle owners will have access to returns through Banco do Brasil.
It is necessary that the owner has registered the police report on the day of the occurrence, as the refund of the tax will be proportional to the amount paid up to the month in which the crime occurred. Another observation of great importance is that drivers in default with debts from another vehicle will not be able to withdraw the reimbursement until the debt is properly settled.
The redemption will be made according to the month of the event:
- 1st quarter of 2022: reimbursement on 04/03/2023;
- 2nd quarter of 2022: reimbursement on 04/17/2023;
- 3rd quarter of 2022: reimbursement on 5/2/2023;
- 4th quarter of 2022: refund on 5/2/2023.
If the owner misses the dates stipulated upon registering the theft, the amount can only be accessed through Sefaz-SP. To consult the amount to be received, access the Portal of the Secretariat ofFarm and Planning.
After accessing the site, go to the “Consult theft or theft refund” tab, then click on “Services” and finish on the “Restitution consultation for stolen and stolen vehicle in this State” tab. It will be necessary to inform the police report number and Renavam of the stolen vehicle.
