The end of allergies: research on genetically modified eggs advances

A egg allergy it is a common condition in children and can be triggered by various foods, even vaccines. However, researchers are using genome-editing technology to create a variety of chicken eggs that can be safely consumed by people with allergies.

By genetically modifying chickens, they are working to reduce or eliminate the proteins allergens present in eggs, providing a risk-free option for allergic individuals.

This innovative approach offers the possibility to enjoy the nutritional benefits of eggs without the worries of allergic reactions.

Egg allergy symptoms can vary from person to person, covering a range of manifestations. Among them are skin inflammation, or hives, stomach cramps, runny nose and sneezing, nasal congestion, nausea and vomiting, as well as difficulty breathing.

In more severe cases, anaphylaxis, a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction, can occur, requiring immediate medical treatment. It is critical to be aware of these symptoms and seek appropriate medical assistance when identifying any signs. allergic reaction to the egg, especially if the symptoms are severe or if the person has a history of anaphylaxis.

Science creates genetically modified eggs for allergy sufferers

Researchers at Hiroshima University have taken an important step forward in developing a solution for egg allergy. Using genome-editing technology known as TALENs, they managed to create a chicken egg that does not contain the ovomucoid protein (OVM), one of the main causes of allergy.

OVM accounts for approximately 11% of all proteins present in egg whites. This achievement is promising and may offer a safe alternative for egg-allergic individuals, allowing them to enjoy this food without worrying about adverse reactions.

It is surprising how many food products contain eggs, egg powder or dried eggs. These ingredients are present in a variety of foods, such as breading and smoothies, salad dressing, ice cream, candy, cake, crepes and waffles, as well as many others.

Also, it is important to note that most flu vaccines are produced using egg-based technology.

Therefore, for people with an egg allergy, it is essential to read food labels carefully and talk to health professionals about the composition of vaccines to avoid any allergic reaction unwanted.

The researchers used TALENs genome-editing technology to target a specific region of the RNA of the chickens, known as exon 1, responsible for encoding specific proteins, including ovomucoid protein (OVM).

Eggs produced by the genetically engineered chickens were carefully analyzed for the presence of OVM, mutated protein variants and any unwanted effects.

Test results revealed that the eggs had no visible anomalies and were completely free of OVM and its mutated variants.

Although the complete genome sequencing of the modified eggs revealed the presence of mutations, indicating the occurrence of undesired effects, these mutations did not affect the regions responsible for coding proteins.

These promising results indicate that the genome-editing technique used was effective in creating LMO-free chicken eggs. However, it is important to continue studies to ensure safety and evaluate possible long-term side effects.

Research in this area is advancing and may bring hope to egg-allergic people by offering them a safe, allergen-free food option.
