Camilo Santana posted a video to communicate the news to Fies students. In the images, he states that the Ministry of Education (MEC) decided to raise the funding limit for the medicine course to prevent student dropout.

Who will have access to the new Fies limit for Medicine courses?

As published by Agência Brasil, from the day it comes into effect, the new ceiling will not be restricted to new financing. Students already enrolled in Medicine courses will also be able to benefit from the increase.

However, the National Fund for the Development of Education (FNDE) reported that the half-yearly amount of R$ 60,000 will be valid only for the Medicine course, as it has more expensive monthly fees. The other courses continue with a maximum value of R$ 42,983.70.

What is the real impact on student tuition?

With the previous ceiling, medical students who had faithful were able to finance R$7,140 per month each semester. The tuition difference should be paid by the students themselves.

According to Agência Brasil, the monthly fees for the course fluctuate between R$ 8,000 and R$ 12,000. Therefore, students would have to disburse approximately R$ 5 thousand. The new ceiling can deduct up to R$ 10,000 from the monthly fee.

How does Fies work?

With Fies, private institutions of higher education receive the monthly fee of students benefiting directly from the FNDE. However, this does not mean that the student will be exempt from tuition.

He only starts paying off the financing after receiving his diploma and starting to work in the area. The mechanism is similar to student loans made to college students in the United States.
