Last Saturday, January 28, authorities in Western Australia were on constant alert. They stated that a radioactive capsule to use in mining was lost as they made their way to Perth, the local capital. The alert was published on Friday, the 27th, when they informed about the danger for several regions, including Perth, about “risk of radioactive substance”.
“The substance is used inside gauges in mining operations. Exposure to this substance can cause burns or radiation sickness,” said the local Fire and Emergency Service.

Andrew Robertson, Australia's director of health, said the capsule can cause burns when it gets close to the body.
“If it’s kept long enough and people are exposed long enough, it could have some more serious effects. acute conditions, including impacts on your immune system,” said the director to journalists who collected the information.
Lost radioactive capsule in Australia
The capsule contains Cesium-137 and was lost while being transported from Newman in the north of the country to the northeast in Perth. The alert was confirmed by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services. According to local information, Newman is 1,200 kilometers from Perth.
The capsule was lost when the mining truck was heading towards the city of Perth. The vehicle started the journey on January 12th, and they only realized the capsule in the last week. Upon noticing the absence, the responsible services received the alert, as instructed by the authorities.
The capsule supposedly belonged to the Rio Tinto mine, but the company has not confirmed the event. It is believed that the capsule may have fallen while the truck was moving from one city to another.
