Some other photos show students hanging from bridges or park benches in dejected poses. In still others, students lie facedown on stairs or in grassy fields.

Why did photos of Chinese students go viral?

The images, which went viral on social media, allude to the fact that 11.6 million students are about to enter a difficult job market for young people.

On Thursday, youth unemployment hit a record high for the second straight month. As the Covid-19 outbreak subsided, the market reheated and job opportunities became even more chaotic in China.

The unemployment rate for Chinese 16-24 year olds rose to 20.8% from 20.4% in April, the National Bureau of Statistics said. Admission to universities became a tool to get better jobs, but the market was crowded with people with resumes in their hands.

China's student crisis

With the pandemic, higher education has become especially popular as many students have chosen to stay in school rather than look for jobs. This happened in an economy that was virtually at a standstill under Covid zero restrictions.

Between 2021 and 2022, the number of students enrolled in institutions of University education increased by more than 6%. But instead of celebrating their diplomas, many students now joke that their studies were a waste of time.

One user on Douyin, a video-sharing platform, wrote, "I love this style of graduation photo, it's very similar to my half-dead life state." Apparently, the situation of young Chinese graduates is an incredible barrier to be overcome.
